本书是《联绵字理论问题研究》的续篇。基本观点是：汉语里只有人类语言共有的造词法，没有什么特殊的构词法，没有用特殊的构词法创造的“联绵字/词—双音单纯词”。就已经考察的主流派权威著作而言，它们用来支持“联绵字/词—双音单纯词”说的理论都靠不住，例词均不当其说。现代联绵字理论严重脱离汉语实际，盛行数十年以来造成严重的负面影响。本书初步考察了现代联绵字理论在国内人才培养、汉语词汇研究及字典词典等领域造成的危害。
