军阀话语有趣、有用，富于学术研究价值。百余年来，中外相关研究不绝如缕。著者于20世纪末借助新兴电子检索技术与域外访学，研习多方史料与先行研究，发现在古今用例语链之中，汉籍军阀原属军功语境，在近代日本“倒军阀”民主运动中转换出批判性贬义，再舶返中土，为社会各界并革命党人的以文制武，整合军政、军党关系服务。军阀一词的跨域传输及其转义功用，是近代中国、东亚和世界历史文化之共通课题。著者的前期研究再经本次修订，期待与读者诸君共勉。
