Summary
公元十七年，王莽新朝政年间，全国大部分地区连年水旱蝗灾，百姓缺吃少穿，哀鸿遍野，加之官府徭役繁多，横征暴敛，绿林山区百姓更是苦不堪言，京山新市人王匡、王凤，王常竖起造反大旗，数月期间发展到了七八千人，史称“绿林军”。公元二十三年一月，绿林军向西挺进，逼近王莽统治的军事重镇宛城，此时，绿林军已发展到十余万人，绿林义军为防止刘氏兄弟篡夺胜利果实，坚持于公元二十三年二月初一，在清水（今白河）中沙洲上，设坛拥立刘氏家族中儒弱无能的刘玄为帝，号“更始”，绿林军亦改称为“汉军”。
