本书重在探索“通中外”语境下报刊为载体的西学传播与近代政治变革关系：上篇侧重分析“通中外”语境下近现代报刊史探索的语境、脉络及其价值取向等；中篇从报刊承载“新知”与近代社会结构变动关系的维度，分析近代报刊与国家、社会关系重构的互动关系，呈现报刊在社会结构重构中的舆论建构或“舆情向背”等角色；下篇从宏观研究转向个案分析，通过清末留日学生报刊、《民报》《晨报》等经典个案的文本及传播网络分析，探讨在近代社会与政治舞台变迁场景下报刊报人所发挥的主体性角色及成败得失的历史省思。
