本书主要采用传统方言学和方言地理学的方法，利用大连地区18个汉语方言点（14个汉族汉语方言点、4个满族汉语方言点）田野调查的材料，进行大连方言的语音专题性研究以及地域差异、民族差异的研究，以期揭示大连方言的全貌，加强大连方言形成历史的研究，为辽宁省胶辽官话的研究提供参考；并结合前人的相关研究成果，将大连方言与山东胶辽官话、与北京官话进行对比，深化大连方言的语音演变研究，推动大连方言与山东胶辽官话、与北京官话的接触研究。
