汉语史上有两本天书，《易经》和《红楼梦》。重新发现“红楼”，重新发现“中国”……《红楼梦》的问世，既标记着对以往历史的颠覆，又标记着一种人文精神的崛起。中国历史文化的全息性，得以在《红楼梦》里获得淋漓尽致的呈现。李劼此著问世已有二十年，仅在大陆就出过好几版，本版今扩至十六章，增订内容是近年在美国西部伯克利大学所作的一次演讲长文，即《红楼梦》与西方文艺复兴经典之间的对称性，从而补足了此前未曾充分展开的想法。从一定意义上说，既解读了《红楼梦》，又解读了中国文化及其作为参照的西方文化之背景。
